Q. I need to replace the air conditioner in my rental. In order for me to claim the expense on my tax return. Does the air conditioner need to be energy efficient or not? Asked by Lois Rivers - Thu Jul 30 10:14:50 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The energy efficiency has nothing to do with the deduction on your tax return. You may be eligible for a tax credit if the energy savings is enough. Check with your state Department of Revenue (or whatever the name is of your tax department). The next paragraph is based on the wild assumption that you are referring to a rental property. If the air conditioner is for your personal residence (primary home or vacation home), then there is no deduction. Are you talking about a central A/C system or a window "box"? A window box unit, while you can hide it under "repairs" is eligible for the Section 179 expense deduction. (This is like depreciation, but you take the entire amount in the first year.) Should I repair or replace? Q. My central air conditioner is 20 years old, although I replaced a $600 part about 3 years ago. Is it time to replace the entire unit and if so, what brands are best in terms of reliability and "energy star" efficiency? Should I use single room units instead? I would be happy without having the whole house cool, if that would be more energy efficient. I live in Pasadena, southern California, if that makes a difference. Asked by Michelleh - Mon Jun 23 23:22:55 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. Yup, I would agree it`s a perfect time to get a TRANE brand air condo unit. They are very reliable and the newer ones are very power efficient. If you get the same size unit, all you need to do is replace the outside unit. You can buy one at your local heating shop and install it yourself, but for warranty work I would have them install it and add the freon to it, or what they call charging it. Q. In an air conditioner, a substance that easily evaporates and condenses is used to transfer energy from a room to the air outside. When the substance evaporates, A. it absorbs energy as heat from the surrounding air. B. it transfers energy as heat to the surrounding air. C. energy is transferred by conduction. D. energy is transferred by convection. Asked by luckycharmsgirl19 - Thu Apr 2 09:45:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Air is cooled in the evaporator coil of an air conditioner. The heat energy of the air is absorbed by the refrigerant, typically some form of freon, as latent heat. Heat is transferred by three means, conduction, convection and radiation. We can eliminate radiation. Heat from the air is transferred to the outside surface of the evaporator coil by convection. The heat then passes through the coil by conduction and then from the inside surface of the coil to the refrigerant by convection, so both C and D could be correct. The question specifically asks what is happening when the refrigerant evaporates. The answer that makes the most sense is A, it absorbs heat from the air.
