Air filter?
Q. Would it be possible to re use a air filter for my car, if I take it out wash it in the sink and put it back when it drys? Im tight for cash at the moment but I just read that a clean filter will help with gas milage, & I need all the help I can get with that.
Asked by sw312 - Thu May 1 10:39:45 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have a K&N re-usable filter ( or other equivalent such as the green filters, ect ) then yes. If you have a regular paper filter, then no. When you attempt to wash a paper filter, you will pretty much destroy it even though it may not be apparent. You will get worse gas milage because you will mess up the micro air channels in the filter, and even more likely you will push dirt around in the filter and it will not flow air like a new filter. Purchase a new paper filter ( cheap now, expensive in the long run ), or get a re-usable style filter like a K&N ( expensive now, cheaper in the long run ).

What is the Best AIR Filter material for short ram intake systems?
Q. I've heard of cotton and other material and materials. Just wanted to know thats all. p.s. I've heard about 3" Universal Carbon Fiber Heat Shield Air Intake Filter. Is this any good and the best filter?
Asked by benteam5 - Mon Jul 21 17:34:10 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. You're just paying for the glamor of having carbon fiber, you're not getting any serious gains or benefits from it. It's been proven many many times. All the intakes like to advertise different benefits, but the difference between them is only about .5 horsepower. Not enough to even register, really. Nevermind that an intake itself, will only net you about 2-3 usable horsepower, and on many cars, actually causes a loss of power. So, ask yourself if the cost of it is worth that.

Can you clean a dirty air filter?
Q. The filter in my air conditioning/heating unit (in my apartment) is extremely dirty. Maintenance is supposed to come and change them once a month, but I guess they haven't gotten around to it this month. I plan on getting a new one soon, but I'm wondering - is it possible to clean them somehow, until I get a new one? I've noticed that since it has been dirty, the system is much louder (running the heat OR the a/c). Could this be due to the dirty filter, or may there be something else wrong with the system?
Asked by Delvala - Sat Mar 31 20:43:51 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes you can and it will help with the noise, if there is nothing else wrong with the system. Usually when air filters are dirty the system is stressing and working harder to suck in as much air as its shooting out cause it cant shoot out air if it can't suck it in to cool it down or heat it up. You can use a hose attachment on a vacume cleaner just be very careful and gentle the filters are easy to damage if there the cheap kind. If your vacum cleaner has a setting for low, use it. Another option is to clan off all the big stuff off the filter then use a can of air, ususally sold at computer stores or walmart in the electronics dept by their computer stuff, and blow all the dust off from both sides. You can also get old fashoined and… [cont.]

Installing a Cone air filter on a stock intake tube?
Q. I am planning to install a cone air filter (those found in autozone) in the place of a stock air box of the air intake. But i am planning to keep the original rubber tube. Is that possible? I know it will not give as many hp as the CAI... Will there be any problems such as check engine light turning on? Any help is appreciated... By the way the car is a 95 maxima.
Asked by Napalm84 - Wed Oct 31 16:37:04 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Are you open for a better idea? Replace the air filter inside your present (COLD) air- box With a K&N. Forget the cone filter because you'll forever be drawing underhood hot air. There's more oxygen (wich turns into power) in cold air than stale old hot air.

How often should the car air filter be replaced?
Q. I have an honest mechanic who told me today that I don't have to follow my car's factory maintenance schedule to change the air filter. I use this car only for commute for 20 miles round trip daily on weekdays. Wondering how often should I replace the air filter in your opinion. Thanks.

A. whenever it gets dirty, think of it just like any air filter. you pull it out and if its white and clean, with not too much debris stuck in it, then its still clean, but once your white filter becomes black, and you have large stuff stuck in it like pieces of leaves and dirt and bugs, then its time to clean it. what i recommend is a K&N filter, its a replacement which instead of being made of paper, its cotton with oil, so when it gets dirty and clogged you just clean it instead of replacing it, it pays for itself in a year. im not endorsing the product or anything just letting you know about something you should look into.

What is the best oil filter and engine air filter for 2004 Saturn ION 2 sedan car?
Q. What is the best oil filter and engine air filter for 2004 Saturn ION 2 sedan car and where can we buy it cost effectively? Any one has an idea what brand filters Saturn dealership is using? I am thinking we should find out what they are using and instead of paying them very high ...we should do it ourselves.

A. All Saturn cars have AC-Delco filters throughout the car from the factory. Wix, Modorcraft (made by Purolator) and Purolator Gold by name are equally as good. If the Saturn dealer isn't using AC-Delco filters the public is being ripped. Be extreemly careful if you intend to use a replacement K&N air cleaner on a GM (Saturn) product that's still under factory warranty. Do not let your certified Saturn dealer see it in your car or your factory warranty will evaporate like Casper the ghost. Cheap discount store Fram filters should be left on the discount store shelves.

How can you tell if a car air filter is dirty?
Q. How can you tell if a car air filter is dirty? How dirty is too dirty? My filter is mostly still white with some black, do I need to replace it?
Asked by Ruggle - Wed Jan 16 13:02:19 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are two types of dirty. The dirty where the black "gunk" won't come off (either by air or wiping) or just plain "used up". When it is just dirt & dust, bang it out, hold it up to the light & if you can see light through it you are ok (you be the judge on how much "life" is left). When it's the gunk, the filter is done. PS-"Just me" & "Jonbel", thumbs up!

What could cause oil in the air filter and houseing?
Q. The other day my car started to loose power on the freeway(as it has so many times before) I pulled over a few times and restarted it..Soon after I smelled somthing burning and when I opened the hood, oil was leaking from the air breather onto the exaust manifold and had caught on fire. After further inspection I realized that oil was also in the air filter houseing as well as all over the filter. The car is able to start and run. Any Ideas Please let me know.

A. More than likely, there is either a permanent mechanical problem inside your engine or there is a problem with your pcv (emissions) system. It's best to have a certified / licensed professional determine the source, because it is either relatively minor or very major.

A. Your car does not have a filter. If it did, you would find the information in the "Climate Control" section of your manual and would provide the location of the filter. On my Taurus, I have to pull some clips that holds the plastic cowl down on the passenger side of the engine bay.

A. Eventually yes. The reason the evaporator will get filled with dust and restrict airflow. At some point the unit will continually ice up because of no air passing through it to carry the cold away (actually to provide nornmal air to the evaporator to be cooled)

A. I have a Scion XB of the same year and I would assume they have the same engine. The air filter is the flat waffer type. It is located in the engine compartment on the drivers side. It is located inside a black plastic compartment that has clips holding the lid on. Just unsnap the lid and the filter is inside.

What happen if I do not change the dirty air filter in the car?
Q. What happen if I do not change the dirty air filter in the car? Actually, how does the air filter affect the car performance and gas consumption, etc?
Asked by jolin10 - Thu Apr 19 03:03:44 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. if the air filter is dirty, less air gets into the engine and causes higher gas consumption to a car. gas and air mix in almost equal parts...the spark pulg ignites the gas and pushes the pistons up and down. if there is not enough air, then there is more gas than normal and more waste of gas and it would not run efficiently. if your strapped for money to buy a new one, just use air from a compressor at the gas station or buy air cans to clean it out.

A. Typically older push mowers used a 'steel housing' for their air cleaner assemblies - mounted with a simple slotted screw to the carb housing - on the right side of the mower ( looking from behind) . Unscrew the slotted screw and the cover comes off exposing the air filter element- usually a foam type - Remove and install replacement ( you can either take old one in or that and motor numbers - stamped into flywheel shroud on top of the motor) . New ones use part of the plastic shroud or a plastic cover to hold the filter in - a paper type. Typically its held on by a single machine screw , the cover comes off and the filter cartridge is right there - looks like a small automotive filter. Replacement is similar, motor numbers usually on a… [cont.]
