The British thermal unit (BTU or Btu) is a traditional unit of energy equal to about 1.06 kilojoules. It is approximately the amount of energy needed to heat 1 pound (0.454 kg) of water 1 °F (0.556 °C). It is used in the power, steam generation, heating and air conditioning industries. In scientific contexts the BTU has largely been replaced by the SI unit of energy, the joule, though it may be used as a measure of agricultural energy production (BTU/kg). It is still used unofficially in metric English-speaking countries (such as Canada and the United Kingdom), and remains the standard unit of classification for air conditioning units manufactured and sold in many non-English-speaking metric countries.

In North America, the term "BTU" is used to describe the heat value (energy content) of fuels, and also to describe the power of heating and cooling systems, such as furnaces, stoves, barbecue grills, and air conditioners. When used as a unit of power, BTU per hour (BTU/h) is the correct unit, though this is often abbreviated to just "BTU".

The unit MBTU was defined as one thousand BTU, presumably from the Roman numeral system where "M" stands for one thousand (1,000). This is easily confused with the SI mega (M) prefix, which multiplies by a factor of one million (1,000,000). To avoid confusion many companies and engineers use MMBTU to represent one million BTU. Alternatively a therm is used representing 100,000 or 10 BTU, and a quad as 10 BTU.

Does water heater btu rating include the efficiency of the heater?
Q. Does water heater btu rating include the efficiency of the heater? Is the the btu rating of the water heater, the actual amount of energy that is absorbed into the water or is that just the input and you have to added in the efficiency. In othr words if I wanted to heat up 100 gallons of water 10 degrees per hour. Do I need a heater that has an input of 8330 btu's or do I need to find the efficiency of the heater and add that in.

A. These two items are completely separate. Efficiency is the useful power output versus the total power consumed, and a BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. The BTU is what you are actually concerned with for this particular question, the efficiency is related to the power consumption and not the actual heat output. Hope this makes sense.

How cost effective is a 5,000 BTU window air conditioner for a small bedroom?
Q. I want to cool off a small bedroom. The home has central air but thermostat is set higher than I'd like. I want to cool my western-facing bedroom more that what the thermostat is set at and not sure which way to go. A tower fan or small 5,000 BTU window air conditioner. If I get the tower fan, I'd have to change the thermostat from 78 degrees to 74 degrees. If I get a widnow unit, I can keep the central air thermostat at 78 and just cool my room off. Which is more cost effective?

A. I "had" exactly the same situation. I wanted to cool the bedroom where I sleep without cooling the rest of the house. I set the thermostat for the house on 80. I bought a 6000 BTU unit for my bedroom and it works great. My dog and two cats also think it's great. I have only had it about a month. The paper, work with the "energy efficient" unit, said it would cost $49 a year to run. I'll believe that when I see it. Haven't gotten my first bill yet. Hope it's not too high. Oh Yea...I got my unit at Sam's for $136.38.

How do you determine the BTU?
Q. Hello, Glenn Kawesch here. How do you determine a room BTU? Hopefully i am using the terminology correctly. I am trying to determine how much heating and cooling I need for a 2000sqft home. Glenn Kawesch

A. Approx. 120,000 btu Roughly, 600 ft2 per ton of cooling = 3.2 tons x 37.500 = 120,000 btu heat.
