What type of air movement should you expect under those conditions?
Q. Conditions: If you are sitting on a beach on a warm summer day, you might see the bright sunlight striking the beach and the ocean near the shore. What type of air movement should you expect under those conditions? A. cooler air blowing from the ocean and pushing warm air over land and upward. B. movement back and forth equally between land and ocean. C. movement of air from the land out over the ocean. D. warmer air blowing from the ocean and pushing cool air over the land and upward.

A. The air over the ocean will be cooler and gaining mass since water is evaporating into it, so you will have a cool breeze heading into the land from the ocean, pushing the warmer air upward and perhaps causing precipitation.

What happens if air is injected into the body?
Q. I inject vaccine into my dad's upper arm daily. My dad is a terminal lung and kidney cancer patient. Yesterday, he had an emergency because of shortness of breath. Usually he could breathe normally without the oxygen supply for about 5 minutes. Now, he feels exhausted without the supply even if it's for a short while. Is it possibly because I injected some air when I injected the vaccine? I know that there's usually a bit of air in the syringe when I draw out the vaccine from its bottle. I would stop injecting right before the bubble enters. Does the air still enter although I stop before right before the bubble enters? How to avoid injecting air into the body? And what ARE the effects of air being injected? I inject right under… [cont.]

A. First of all an air bubble will not kill you. It would need to be injected directly into an artery or vein. The best way to avoid air in the syringe is to first pull the plunger back to the amount of medicine you are going to withdraw. Then put the needle into the med bottle, push the plunger in to put the air in the med bottle. This will displace the med you are going to draw out, making it easier to get the correct amount of medicine into the syringe. This will keep you from getting too much air in the syringe. A tiny bit of air is needed to "seal" the medicine in when you give an intramuscular injection. As you inject the medicine, the tiny air pocket will go in last. Hope this helps.

What is the difference between air pressure and air density?
Q. Is there a difference? I know that pressure is directly related to temperature which means that when pressure rises so does the temperature but is air density different? Is air pressure only to do with particles of air or can you have a high air pressure just by compressing air. Anything else vaguely related would be great also. Thanks.

A. Understanding air pressure The weight of the air pressing down on the Earth, the ocean and on the air below causes air pressure. Earth's gravity, of course, causes the downward force that we know as "weight." Since the pressure depends upon the amount of air above the point where you're measuring the pressure, the pressure decreases as you go higher. Air pressure is related to its density, which is related to the air's temperature and height above the Earth's surface. (Related: Understanding air density). Air pressure changes with the weather. In fact, it's one of the most important factors that determines what the weather is like. (Related: How high and low pressure affect the weather). How does the fresh air damper feature of a thermostat work?
Q. I have a thermostat in my home with a fresh air feature that brings in air from the outside based on the outside temperature. How does it determine what temperature to use when opening the fresh air damper? How long does it stay open? How does the fresh air damper differential setting affect the fresh air damper function? The manual that came with the thermostat was of little to no help on this. Nope, didn't steal it. I bought a new home that came with it. Just trying to figure out how it works.
Asked by SS - Mon Aug 18 01:36:37 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's commonly called an economizer. When the temperature outside is cooler than the set point of the thermostat it will open the damper to assist your AC unit and save energy. It's most commonly used in commercial operations that require air conditioning inside even when it's 50 or below outside. Just because you bought a thermostat with that feature doesn't mean your system is designed for it. Or did you actually take the thermostat from work?

How good can air purifiers be in regards to toxins?
Q. How good can air purifiers be in regards to toxins? For example, if I accidentally burn a few pounds worth of plastics, accidentally release some Clorine gas, and accidentally mix two dangerous chemicals, and cause massive amounts of super toxic gasses and chemicals to be released, is there any air purifier that, regardless of how toxic the toxins are, or what they are, will clean the air to the point of being safe to re-enter this hypothetical air tight room?
Asked by magic - Sun Dec 13 20:25:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You're going to need an air purifier with massive, massive, massive amounts of carbon running at very high fan speed. While there are several media within air purifiers for various needs, only carbon will absorb the kinds of smoke and gasses you are talking about. I don't know who the joker is above this post or what he's trying to sell, but I've never heard of the air purifier he's recommending. The air purifier with the most amount of carbon lies in the Allerair line that you can can read about here: Having said that, I'm not sure anything but professional cleaning would make the kind of room you're talking about safe.

What causes the air conditioner on my car to blow hot and cold air?

A. They don't use Freon any longer- what is in there is called R143-a Also, if it starts blowing warm, but after a short time blows cold again, it is just ther cycling of the compressor. If it stays warm, you could have a few different things going on.

How do you keep cold air inside during the summer?
Q. I am renting an apartment and the apartment is over a four car garage. All windows are east and west. Last summer, it was 90 degrees in here with the central air set to 70. Yesterday, the temperature was 74 degrees outside and 79 degrees inside. I can't repeat last summer... Any tips for keeping the air in? I hung a thick cloth curtain with fleece backing over the stairwell on a tension rod, I put in a clean air filter, and I used air deflectors to shoot the air out instead of up on the floor vents. Any tips? We have 4 sets of windows with blinds closed all the time during the summer. If you recommend additional insulation, where's the best place to put it? Above? Below? Around? Is it expensive? I absolutely love my landlords and don't… [cont.]

A. Assuming the AC unit has been serviced and operating correct. You may need a way to get rid of the hot air in the garage. The cars will put out a lot of heat as they sit there and cool. An exhaust fan would help remove some of the heat. Windows that have the e-glass will cut down on the heat gain. If the owners won't replace the windows, maybe you could work out a trade and put the windows in yourself and deduct it from your rent? If they won't go for that, what about a heat reflecting film you can install on the inner panes? Would they go for a window AC unit? I know they want you guys comfortable, because you sound like good tenants. Hope you can work it out.

What will happen if an air-to-air missile flies over its maximum flight ceiling?
Q. For example, an air-to-air missile has a maximum flight/service ceiling of 66,000 ft. What will happen if the air-to-air missile flies above 66,000 ft? I am asking, what will happen to the missile if it ever goes above its maximum flight ceiling. What will happen to it? The scenario is that the missile goes above its flight ceiling.
Asked by unknown - Wed Jun 23 01:31:58 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. By definition, a missile cannot fly above its ceiling. The ceiling is the altitude above which it cannot fly. So a missile with a ceiling of 66,000 feet will never get above 66,000 feet. If it could do that, then 66,000 feet would not be its ceiling.

How can I improve air quality / circulation in my bedroom?
Q. I have a window air conditioner unit (so my window cannot open, meaning I don't get much fresh air in my room). My room also tends to be a bit on the dusty side. How can I get some good air circulation or better air quality in my room in order to improve my sleep and schoolwork productivity?

A. Is there filter in the unit? Should be about a 1/4" thick piece of foam stuff. If no, get one and clean it every so often. The average hardware should have some. While you are looking for the filter, get a spray bottle and mix up a weak vinegar solution. Spray it on the inside coils liberally to rinse the coils clean. You can rinse it with straight water or let it self-rinse while operating. There may be a vent option on the unit. They will have different ways of labeling it on the unit, but essentially it opens a vent to the outside and sucks a small amount of fresh air into the unit when it operates. Go outside and hose off the coils with a garden hose. Don't spray too hard and bend the fins. You can use a liquid cleaner (Winde [cont.]

Is it ok to cover an air return vent with a picture if proper clearance is provided?
Q. We would like to hide an ugly air return with a picture. To provide proper clearance for the air return we would like to mount two 2x4's at the top and bottom of the air return nailed through the drywall. The picture would then mount flat on the 2x4s providing either 1 1/2 " or 3 1/2" (depending which side of the the stud we use) of side access for the air to pass through. Is this ok? PS - The air return is very, very, very ugly.

I hear you on this one too - sooo ugly and in my house they are right where they shouldn't be sticking out like a sore thumb, I tried hiding them too, but get ready to dust off your picture every other day and your heating system won't run efficiently either. I finally just painted them the room color and I'm learning to just ignore them.

What is the best air filter that you can buy?
Q. I'm having to change my air filter every 2 or 3 weeks. My townhome is about 1200 square feet, but I don't understand why I have to change the filters so often. I have tried the air filters that are about $20 for one, and the cheaper ones that are $15 for 3. The $20 filter lasted about a week longer than the others, but for the cost it doesn't really add up. Home depot sells an air filter that costs $100, and it's suppose to be for 30 years or something. Anyway, what's the best air filter that I can buy?

But to answer you question on the effectiveness on the filters, which by the way should be changes every 90 days, the spun fiber glass is the cheapest and worst filter you can buy. One way to see for yourself is to take baby powder and sprinkle it over the filter, just about all the powder fall through. With the 3 for $15.00, naturalaire filters, they fare better in stopping the talc powder. The best would be the 3M Electrostatic filters. Take a look at the MERV rating on your filters when you buy them. If you are asthmatic or have severe allergies, I would recommend the 3M filters, otherwise the Naturalaire filters work just fine. A. An air washer is an air cleaner/purifier but an air cleaner is not an air washer. And air cleaner purifies the air from airborne contaminants. Ad air washer washes, humidifies and ionizes the air. If I were in the market for this I would be looking at the air washer. One, because there is no filters. Two, because it maintains humidity. And three, I think it better overall .personal opinion

What do the controls on my air conditioner unit do?
Q. I have an air conditioner unit. It sits on the windowsill of my apartment. The maker appears to be a registered trademark named Simplicity. The unit has the two modes, air conditioner mode and fan mode. It seems to have a control for three speeds, high, medium and low. Then there is a control to make two blades glide back and forth. I should think those are to circulate the air inside the apartment here? These blades have a switch for close and open. The unit has what looks like a timer control, it is a button with a clock symbol. I guess that is so the air conditioner goes on and off at a specified hour. There are the important temperature controls. One control that has got me a little confused is a button with a picture of a… [cont.]

Is Air Force ROTC the best route in becoming a commercial pilot?
Q. I am pursuing a career as a commercial airline pilot. Ive heard that Air Force ROTC is a good choice in pursuing it, but, is it the best? Should i join the reserves and attend college? Should i do both? Is Pilot school the way to go instead of Military? Just a sidenote, i do not want to become an air force pilot.

A. If you can meet the standards to be an air force pilot, why not do it for awhile? You can always leave when the airlines are profitable again...but who knows when that will be. They are not going to be hiring for quite some time, nor will you make money as an airline pilot.

If home central air thermostat is set to FAN instead of AUTO, does any fresh air get mixed in?
Q. Assume that the temp is such that cooling compressor doesn't kick in. So is it just recirculating indoor air or does in mix it with some fresh air.

A. mine does... if you can follow the ducts in your basement you will see where the outdoor air intake is... you should check it from the outside because it has a screen that can get clogged with dust and pollen some HVAC systems have a fresh air intake and some don't
