How well do window air conditioners work?
Q. How well do the air conditioners that you put in your window work? Do they get the room really cold, or just a little cold? Are they worth getting? My room is 165 sq ft.

A. Window units works great. Yes they will cool the room. Make sure you get the size that is adequate for your room. Window units was all I used until I moved in a house with central air.

How does the hum of air conditioners and other electronic equipment affect a person's hearing?
Q. For a physics assignment I need to describe how the hum of air conditioners and other electronic equipment can have a detrimental affect on ones hearing. Low frequencies and low intensity vibrations affect a person psychologically, but insofar I can find no evidence to suggest that due to a particularly low frequency a person's hearing would be affected. If anyone has any information that would be greatly appreciated.

A. As the small bones of the inner ear vibrates from exposure to sound, the brain processes this vibration the same as it processes all others. This processed vibration has no beneficial effect to add to the brain, and blocking the noise can cause a subdued irritation to develop in the subliminal parts of the brain. The brain gets the response to move from the unnecessary vibration as a self preservation instinct against this intrusive vibration, and subsequent inner ear fluid movement. The inner ear can be the source of many problems related to balance and vertigo is a common result. The onset of Meniere's Disease like symptoms, are common to kitchen workers in industrial situations. These symptoms will normally reverse when exposure to… [cont.]

Do air conditioners take up more money the lower the temperature?
Q. Hi, everyone. I want to know for a fact, do air conditioners take up more money the lower you put the temperature? Or could I put the temperature at any number i want and still have to pay a steady amount? Please, don't just guess, I want to know for a fact if this is true. Thnx!

A. Your air conditioner works against the outside temperature. The more work it does, the more energy it uses. In general, if you set the temperature higher, you pay less for cooling. (That fan works all the time, but the compressor turns on & off as the thermostat calls for more cooling. The compressor is the larger load. The longer it spends running, the more you pay.)

A. PV=nRT The basic rule for gases says if you can manipulate the volume and pressure of a gas to lower the temperature. Air conditioners use this principle with freon gas. When you change the volume (by moving a piston), you can lower the temperature, and cool things like houses.

Air conditioners were the air comes out the bottom?
Q. Do they make such air conditioners? I have one window, I plan to take it out and put in a air conditioner, but I need one that has the air blowing out from the bottom 'cause my window is quite high and there is a drop in the ceiling so a regular one would only blow air up into the ceiling and not into the room. A. Cool air descends and hot air rises, so it doesn't matter if the window is up near the ceiling, because the cool air from the air conditioner would still circulate down to where you are. Additional: The downside to the portable air conditioner mentioned below is that the hose that goes from it to the outside window becomes hot, and then radiates heat from it making the area around the unit hot. You pretty much have to wrap the hose in some type of insulation to not waste energy trying to keep it cool as well. Additional: The diverter the person below mentions is, I believe, one of those curved plastic covers that one nomally uses on floor heating vents to move the air in a sideways manner, rather than allowing it to go straight up out of… [cont.]

Is it better to leave doors open or closed when running air conditioners in every room?

A. I would start by closing the doors on the closet and two bathrooms. From there, I would go with some sort of timing plan. For example, during the day, if you are not using the bedrooms close those doors and leave only the living room A/C on. At night, I'd turn the living room A/C off and let everyone in each bedroom close their doors and control their own tiemperature. It also might depend on the size of these A/Cs. Hopefully, the one in the living room is bigger than the others. If nobody is home during the day, I would close all doors and put the living room A/C on a timer to come on about an hour before you get home. Hope this helps. Q. i have a 2700 sqft home 2 floors. Is it more efficient to have 5 air conditioners running?4 bedrooms 1 in the living room. Or is it more effeint to have central air installed? central air will probably be about 10-15k, would take a few years to make that money back.

A. You'll just need to find another way to mount the AC, like attaching a bracket to the wall instead of the window frame. Make sure you screw into the studs and not just the sheetrock.

Do Ohio landlords have to provide air conditioners?
Q. I've gotten mixed answers on this - can anyone tell me if Ohio (Columbus specifically) requires a landlord to provide air conditioners? We were explicitly told they would be here, then they were all removed from the unit before we moved in and the owner denies that the person who showed us the apartment ever said that.

A. That is a dirty trick, but here is no law that says landlords need to provide air conditioners. Does it mention an air conditioner in your lease? The lease may spell out what the landlord provides. If it says you get one, then you have grounds for complaint. If not plan on moving next year. Grandpa

Are air conditioners supposed to have frost buildup on the outside of the unit?
Q. I live in an apartment complex and our air conditioner is getting ice/frost buildup in certain places on the unit when it has been on for a while. Is this normal, or should I call maintenance to come fix it?
Asked by blondebylaw - Mon May 18 15:50:40 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Are you running it in heat or in air condition mode? If you are running in heat and you have a heat pump it will have frost/ice build up for at least 60 to 90 minutes then it will go into defrost to melt the ice, if after that time has expired and you still have ice/frost then you have problem with defrost board. IF you are running it in cooling and getting ice/frost on the coil you have problems. Shouldn't be ice or frost on coil, maybe on the piping at the unit then i say you undercharged or overcharged or dirty indoor coil, filter or blower problems.

portable air conditioners how much does it cost to run them?
Q. Hi there , does anyone own one of those portable air conditioners on wheels, the ones with a hose attached to an open window? im only looking for the ones that cool only, how much do they cost to run here in Sydney per hour ? lets say for a 1000wt unit, thank you all .
Asked by leonard - Sat Nov 8 21:30:17 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. a 1000 wt unit uses a kilowatt in one hour. You should be able to look at you electrical bill and determine the cost per hour of use. How long will the air conditioner run, it will depend upon the area that you are trying to cool and the ambient temperature of the room. It will also depend upon how cool you like the room. A one kilowatt unit will not be very effective in cooling a large area, nor reducing the temperature a great deal.

A. putting it in the garage would be a bad ideal...the garge would get way to hot and the condenser wouldnt cool the freon efficiently making the unit not cool good plus the compressor wouldnt last long because of high pressure on the valves plus the oil that lubricates it would break down because of the high heat and damage your compressor also..

What size ducts do different types of air conditioners need?
Q. We currently have an evaporatative ducted air conditioner which has to be replaced, we were hoping to get a refrigerated reverse cycle unit instead but the air contioning mechanic told me that the ducting we have would not be suitable. Which ducting has the largest diameter, evoporative or refrigerated? I am worried about what the holes in our ceiling will look like if we do decide to change.

A. I'm sure you'll get a better answer, but on the off chance that you don't, I'll give a shot at this one. First, you should ask your a/c mechanic what s/he meant about the ducting not being suitable. Go ahead and make a pest of yourself - that's what you pay people for. I would ask: In what ways isn't the existing ductwork suitable? How much would it cost to upgrade the ductwork? What would it look like once it's upgraded? What would happen if we just went ahead and used the non-suitable duct-work? Can the new ductwork fit inside the old, or would stuff need to be ripped out? Would the visible vents needs to be changed, or just the ductwork? Can the new ductwork easily fit inside our walls/ceiling/floors, or would major modifications… [cont.]

Why are Fuzzy Logic air conditioners more energy efficient than Thermostats?
Q. It's common knowledge that through the use of carefully crafted Fuzzy Logic rules, an air conditioner can be more energy efficient than a thermostat. What I am curious to know is WHY this is so. Thanks!
Asked by Neil S - Wed Apr 1 09:25:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Two factors contribute to this increased efficiency: First, fuzzy logic control can take advantage of air conditioning machinery which can be set to different levels of output. A thermostats is simply a thermometer, with an electrical switch set to turn "on" when the temperature exceeds the selected threshold. Some air conditioning systems, though, can scale their output (for example by turning on some or all of their units). Fuzzy logic can scale its demand for air conditioning, based on the temperature and humidity. Second, fuzzy logic allows for a more sophisticated control process. Rather than activating the air conditioning system only when it is either "too hot" or "too humid", it can also do so when it is merely "warm and… [cont.]

I'm looking for a quote from Consumer Digest about the price of central air conditioners?
Q. "Prices of central air conditioners vary widely, depending on the size of the system purchased, whether or not ductwork is required and in place, and the complexity of the installation."
