Can an air conditioning attached to the furnace in your house blow up?
Q. Every once in a while you hear of bgger industrial air conditionings on sky scrapers or commercial buildings getting old, and then people reposrt a big bang, and the air conditioning blows up. Can this happen to a house airconditioning??? And what signs should you look for when you try your air conditioning out for the first time in the spring after a cold canadian winter?

A. Dan and Irv are right. Your home A/C unit isn't likely yo explode on you. Your water heater however... that is a different story. The first thing you should do before you fire up your A/C is to make sure it warm enough outside. Operating the unit when it is below, say 55F (13C) is inviting liquid refrigerant to damage your compressor. Slugging is the term. Other things to check: - Clean filter - Clean condenser (outside) coil. Just hose it down. Be careful not to bend or damage the fins. If it looks really dirty, then call for a service tech to do it. They will come armed with a foaming coil cleaner that will fix it right up. - How's your evaporator (inside) coil? Be honest now. How many times has the furnace been run with a… [cont.]

Will we have to replace the air conditioning unit if we remove the heat pump?
Q. We currently have an air to air heat pump. We would like to replace it with a propane furnance. If we do so will we have to replace the air conditioning unit as well? From what I understand, the air to air heat pump utilizes the air conditioning unit to run. Will our current air conditioning unit still work independently from the heat pump? What changes to the unit will need to be made, if any?
Asked by pep_bud - Wed Sep 12 16:37:12 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The easiest way to use your heat pump with a new gas furnace would to use a honeywell t8000 stat with an outdoor sensor. This allows the stat to control the gas furnace for back-up heat and emergency heat and gives you the option of a lock out temp. You will have to remove the evap coil from the air handler a install it in the new ductwork. The other controls that do this type of system are called fossil fuel kits. They cost more money and are harder to install (more wiring).

Why do my heating and air conditioning units come on at the same time?
Q. I have central air. I turned my heater on for the first time yesterday and it seemed to work just fine. I felt the air coming from the vents and it is warm. The temperature reached the set temp on the thermostat. The problem is that my air conditioning unit also comes on. I don't think this is normal. Can someone please tell me why this is happening? Thanks.

A. It may be a heat pump. An easy way to tell is to look at the thermostat. If it has an emergency setting, it is a heat pump. For more info, check out the heat pump page at my source.

How often do air conditioning units need to be charged with freon?
Q. We have been having terrible problems with our central air conditioning unit. Our house is about 8 years old and we have a zone system (separate heating and cooling thermostats for upstairs and downstairs). For the past 2 years the unit is not cooling the house properly (heating works fine). We had the dampers replaced 2 years ago and I know the dampers are fine. We have had several repair technicians look at the unit. They always recharge the unit with more Freon (3 times in 1 summer) after claiming to fix a leak. This past weekend again a repair person claimed that we had an internal leak in the unit. He said that he had plugged the leak and then he charged the unit with Freon. Not only did this not work (our house continued to get… [cont.]

A. A system only needs to be charged once, when it is installed. If it gets a leak, the leak must be repaired, and verified that it is repaired with a vacuum test. It is a laborious process, and some homeowners would rather just juice up the machine each year than spend the funds to get it repaired. Some units have leaks that can never be identified. There are lots of fittings, small bends in the coils, and hundreds of feet of tubing that need to be traced with an accurate tool. Many Tech's don't have access to this tool, and rely on soap bubbles to identify leaks. Contact the manufacturer of your unit, and have them recommend a competent company in your area. If it is the company that you've been using, explain that they have not fixed… [cont.]

What is the reason for a slow or stopped central air conditioning outside cooling fan with a loss of cold air?
Q. The recent problem seems to be related to the outdoor cooling fan. The air conditioning system seems to be working properly, but there is a loss of cooling of the air coming from the indoor air conditioning vents. I inspected the outside unit, and yesterday the cooling fan was stopped with a humming/grinding sound. The capacitor looked good (no bulging), but I'm not an electrician and I have no way (or the knowledge) to test voltages and amperages and such. Anyway, I blew on some dust/dirt/cobwebs around some of the wires, and started the system back on and the fan moved at normal speed and the system worked and cooler air came out. However, today, the indoor temperature wasn't maintained and I went outside and the cooling fan was… [cont.]

A. replace your outdoor fan and while your at it replace the capacitor and everything will be fine. But turn your unit off untill you get it fixed or you'll be changing a compressor or buying a new unit.

When you turn the air conditioning on in your home?
Q. Should there be a small amount of water coming from the base of the unit inside the house? I can't figure out if it's the air conditioning unit or a leaking water heater?
Asked by Maybaby - Tue Mar 27 12:36:27 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No there should not...most likely the drain is stopped up and will need cleaning...this very easy and you can do it yourself ...just remove front cover of unit drain line should be visible along with two copper a/c lines...remove drain line ..flush with water hose ...run some bleach down it and reassemble...this should solve your problem...

Is there a portable air conditioning unit out there on the market?
Q. Please excuse my ignorance, but is there a portable air conditioning unit (blows out cool air in a HOT ROOM) without being attached/fixed to the wall, as in carry it with you just plug it in to a wall socket and have it blow out cool air. I know this may seem like a dumb question, but a simple answer would be much appreciated. Thank you!

A. there are two units that are kind of like that, but not quite. one is called a swamp cooler. they evaporate water to absorb thermal energy in a room, but make the room more humid, and only really work in dry climates. however, they are relatively cheap to buy and use little energy. the other is a regular AC unit, but, this is not a window unit. they make one that is a free standing floor unit that can be pushed around and plugged in anywhere. however, the only downside is that there is a 3 or 4 Inch diameter hose that comes out of the back of the unit that must be run outside, through a window or a cat door or something. the unit is similar to window units in that it must move the heat from the room to the outside, but it does not have to… [cont.]

Q. Do I have to take my car to an air conditioning shop to have it serviced? A. You have to be licensed to handle the chemicals used in the system. They can be dangerous not nearly as dangerous as they were years ago. But Still you also have to have special equipment to recharge the system if you were to break the seal. So in short take it to someone who knows what their doing and is licensed to do so.

Q. I live in a three story townhouse and our air conditioning system works fine except for the basement is freezing and our top bedroom floor gets hardly any circulation. Is their a cheap fix to this?
Asked by Seamus - Wed Jul 8 13:25:26 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. close off the supply regesters and block the return vent in the basement if there are any...if basement gets humid use a dehumidifier...close off the supply regesters partially on 1st floor..you are looking to cut airflow by at least 50% to 1st floor,,also be sure to close regesters completely in room where tstat is located since it will react to temp in that room, you want to delay that rooms temp drop while ac is on...also block off the 1st floor return vent about 3/4 or so, assuming there is a decent size return on the top floor[s].need returns to pull hot air from top floor[s]..not enough to just deliver cold air to the rooms...to block off returns you can buy those magnetic vent covers, similar to refrigerater magnets,,just larger and… [cont.]

Is it dangerous to leave cars air conditioning on while car is off?
Q. My mom says if you leave your cars air conditioning on when you turn the car off, so it automatically is on when you turn your car on, that it hurts the engine. Is that true or is she full of BS? It sounds like complete BS to me.
Asked by Elijah - Mon Jun 9 22:42:58 2008 - - 32 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. It isn't dangerous. When you turn the key to "start" all electrical circuits which are wired through the ignition switch are disconnected, except those which are used for starting the car. When the engine starts and you release the key, from the start position, then all the circuits are again connected. I know a lot of people, most of who don't know the starter from the distributor, who insist that the AC needs to be switched off before starting the car. I don't switch it off and never have had a bit of trouble, with either the engine or the AC on any of my cars.

Why does Dakota air conditioning stop woking after 15 minutes?
Q. My 1998 Dakota air conditioning works great for 15 minutes and then stops. The clutch is not engaged. The pressure and fluid is okay. If I turn it off for 5 minutes it will work for another 15 minutes. Is there some pressure switch that is not working?
Asked by OldBlindGuy - Wed Apr 29 22:27:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. that may be caused by a bad relay for the air conditioner, when they heat up sometimes they will cause this too happen,if the system hasn't ever been opened up it wont be dirt in the system causing this too happen, check the relay for it,and the low pressure valve, that to will cause this too happen, good luck.

What is the best, inexpensive way to add Air Conditioning to my 1993 Chevy G10 Van?
Q. My 1993 Chevy G10 Van has no air and I use it for work. What is the best way to add air conditioning? Ideally I would like a portable cigarette lighter powered one that I can also use in my car, but I haven't found one that is powerful enough or doesn't require a 'cooler evaporator'. RV units usually take too much juice. What aftermarket units are available and how can I get by inexpensively?

What is the average temperature you set your air conditioning at?
Q. We live in central FL. My husband is from a tropical climate and does not want to use air conditioning at all. I would love the air to be set at about 75 but have compromised and am willing to have it set at 80 degrees. I think this is very reasonable, but he insists it is set at about 83 degrees if it is on at all. At this temperature I am very uncomfortable and have trouble sleeping. Am I being unreasonable here or is he?
