Energy conversion efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of an energy conversion machine and the input, in energy terms. The useful output may be electric power, mechanical work, or heat. Energy conversion efficiency is not defined uniquely, but instead depends on the usefulness of the output. All or part of the heat produced from burning a fuel may become rejected waste heat if, for example, work is the desired output from a thermodynamic cycle. Even though the definition includes the notion of usefulness, efficiency is considered a technical or physical term. Goal or mission oriented terms include effectiveness and efficacy. Generally, energy conversion efficiency is a dimensionless number between 0 and 1.0, or 0 to 100%. Efficiencies may not exceed 100%, e.g., for a perpetual motion machine. However, other effectiveness measures that can exceed 1.0 are used for heat pumps and other devices that move heat rather than convert it. Related, more specific terms include

I have often heard that the circle or sphere is the most energy efficient shape found in nature. Is this true, and is it the most structually sound or efficient shape? Asked by Alex - Thu Jun 7 14:09:15 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your first question isn't clear. As for the second one, it depends entirely on how the structure is loaded. A spherical shell is the most efficient shape for a diving bell if your goal is to enclose a given volume with the least amount of metal to hold off the pressure. Answered by Dr. R - Thu Jun 7 23:04:48 2007 How can you tell if a light fitting takes only energy efficient bulbs when doing a building survey? Q. I conduct Building Surveys with regard to new Part L regulations and Energy ratings. The requirements describe the use of energy efficient fittings as opposed to energy bulbs. The logic being that energy efficient fittings can't be used with non efficient bulbs. However there are so many types of fittings now and to be designed that I find it hard to tell from a distance which type they are. Any tips? Asked by Dm - Mon Jan 26 13:38:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A quote from the Energy Saving Trust You can now buy low energy light fittings which will only take low energy lightbulbs. These use a ballast or transformer fitted into the base of the light fitting. It controls the supply of electricity to the bulb, allowing for a small surge of power for a millisecond to light the bulb and then reducing the electricity flow to a very low level. Low energy fittings require a pin based energy saving bulb. This is a different fitting to a conventional bulb but will ensure that the bulbs you buy in future will always save energy, money and the environment. Hope it helps Answered by BILLY G - Mon Jan 26 14:34:54 2009 How to educate staff, children, etc about energy efficient lightbulbs?
Q. I work at a daycare and we are going to swith all our lightbulbs to energy efficeint flourescent bulbs and change all batteries to rechargable. How can we educate our staff, children, and community about energy efficient lightbulbs and how can we get them involved in the switch? Asked by me - Tue Jun 24 14:05:04 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Fairly basic. Explain to them, that when their child leaves the hallway light on for 10 hours, with a normal bulb,it costs 1.00 If the same light was left on with an energy saving bulb,it would only cost 0.20p. Similar thing with rechargeable batteries,1 alkaline battery- 0.50p Rechargeable battery 2.00.-But you can re-charge it 500 times.
